Organic Hemp Production Emphasized to Lawmakers, Farmers During “Organic Week” Policy Conference in Washington, DC

One Organic Farmer Treats Hemp Grown for CBD Like a “Specialty Vegetable Crop”

    By Steven Hoffman

The importance of certified organic in hemp agriculture cannot be overstated. Currently, nearly 80,000 acres are in hemp production in the U.S., and very few of them are certified organic. That means that the majority of hemp produced in the U.S. is being grown conventionally, using potentially toxic, synthetic pesticides and synthetic nitrogen fertilizer derived from the fracking of natural gas.

Frankly, that’s not very good for the environment or for the oncoming climate crisis, as conventional agriculture is one of the largest non-point sources of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions contributing to global warming, and fracking releases massive quantities of methane – another potent GHG – into the atmosphere. On the other hand, organically grown hemp can actually sequester carbon out of the atmosphere and put it back in the soil where it belongs, helping to keep CO2 and other noxious GHGs out of the atmosphere.

Additionally, when given a choice, I’ll choose CBD and hemp extract products that are produced and processed organically, thus minimizing my dietary exposure to toxic pesticide residues and other chemical solvents, because who wants pesticide residues included with their concentrated botanical medicine?

Seeing the explosive growth of the hemp market in the wake of the 2018 Farm Bill, the organic industry’s leading trade association, the Organic Trade Association (www.ota.com) invited my communications agency, Compass Natural, to help plan and present an educational track focused on farmers’ perspectives and market opportunities for certified organic hemp, CBD and related products as part of OTA’s annual Organic Week policy conference, held May 20-23, 2019, in Washington, D.C. OTA’s Organic Week draws organic industry leaders from across the U.S. to interact with policymakers and Congressional leaders to help forward the interests of organic food and agriculture.

At the Organic Week conference, OTA announced that sales of organic products in the U.S. surpassed $50 billion, growing 6.3% to reach a record $52.5 billion in 2018. Almost 6% (5.7%) of all food sold in the U.S. is now organic, driven in large part by demand for organic produce, dairy, plant-based products, dietary supplements, textiles and fiber. “Organic is now considered mainstream. But the attitudes surrounding organic are anything but status quo,” said Laura Batcha, CEO and Executive Director of the OTA. “In 2018, there was a notable shift in the mindset of those working in organic toward collaboration and activism to move the needle on the role organic can play in sustainability and tackling environmental initiatives.”

    Lobbying for Hemp

As part of OTA’s Organic Week, I was scheduled to visit several congressional offices on Capitol Hill, lobbying on behalf of organic food and farming and industrial hemp, CBD and related products. The staff at the offices of Colorado Senators Michael Bennett and Cory Gardner were supportive of industrial hemp in our meetings, and in alignment with Colorado Governor Jared Polis’ goal of furthering Colorado’s leadership in industrial hemp, as were staff leaders in the offices of Colorado Representatives Joe Neguse and Diana DeGette. However, staff at the offices of Idaho Congressmen Russell Fulcher and Mike Simpson deferred to their state’s legislature when it came to my questions regarding Idaho’s seizure in January of a container shipment of industrial hemp from a licensed grower in Oregon bound for processing in Colorado, despite the 2018 federal Farm Bill declaring that interstate transport and commerce of hemp-derived products is now legal throughout the U.S.

In addition to our Capitol Hill visits, I moderated a lively seminar attended by a number of organic farmers interested in or already growing hemp for food, supplements and fiber as part of an educational track focused on hemp during OTA’s Organic Week. At the seminar, longtime organic farmer Chris Jagger, owner of Blue Fox Farm in Oregon, shared how he began growing hemp three years ago. Instead of planting hemp densely, like they do for fiber production where tall stalks and little foliage are desired, Chris farms his hemp like a specialty crop, or “like vegetables,’ he says, to cultivate the delicate hemp flowers for CBD extraction. Currently, a small number of organic certifiers, including OneCert, CCOF and MOSA are certifying farms for organic hemp production, and rumor has it some other major certifiers will soon follow.

At the same time across town, hemp advocate Ben Droz participated in the inaugural Congressional Cannabis Forum hosted on May 21 by Washington, D.C.-based KCSA Strategic Communications. “While covering all aspects of the cannabis market, the KCSA forum presented a hemp panel that examined capital markets and the global economic implications of the legalization of hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill,” said Droz. “If hemp extracts become a global commodity, it might not necessarily benefit small scale farmers and producers,” he cautioned. “However, until the FDA comes up with more clear guidelines concerning hemp products, the big corporate players will continue to sit on the sidelines, allowing time for smaller brands to establish and build market share, but that could change at any time,” he said. Droz noted that the FDA scheduled its first public hearing on hemp and CBD in food and beverage for Friday, May 31, 2019. Information on the hearing is published in the Federal Register.

Organic agriculture is a bright spot in the U.S. farm economy, continuing to grow at a rate more than double the growth rate of the overall U.S. food market. According to new OTA data, the number of organic farms grew by 39% while the total number of farms in the U.S. shrank by 3% between 2012 and 2017. Organic products can now be found in more than 82% of U.S. homes, and in some states, including California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington and my home state of Colorado, organic products are in over 90% of U.S. households. Here’s hoping that organically produced hemp follows suit.

24 Patrick Flaherty – Fiber and the Future

Today we talk with Patrick Flaherty from P F Design Lab, who is studying the entire supply chain of hemp in the United States to better understand where hemp can replace traditional materials.

With the progress over the past five years, no one is denying that the hemp market is making strides. At each event we attend, we sell out every seat, every venue, every time.

But while the hemp market in the United States continues to grow, there is still a disconnect between the farmers growing the hemp and the manufacturers who can make use out of it. Patrick Flaherty is interested in closing that gap.

Where do these gaps in the hemp market exist? Which everyday products could benefit from a hemp upgrade? And how many acres does it take to justify a processing plant?

This is an amazing story of the versatility and opportunity that remains largely untapped in the emerging hemp market.

In this episode, you’ll hear how the future of hemp can impact our farmers throughout the country.

Sold Out!: 2019 NoCo Hemp Expo Expected to Draw Capacity Crowd of Hemp Industry Professionals to Denver

Featuring a special address from Colorado Governor Jared Polis, an Investor Forum, Business Conference, Farm Symposium, Exhibit Hall and an Impressive Lineup of Workshops and Education, the 6th Annual NoCo Hemp Expo is bringing a capacity crowd from throughout the U.S. and over 20 countries to Denver for its sold-out show.

DENVER, Colorado (March 28, 2019) – Hemp growers, producers, manufacturers, retailers, investors and others will be descending this week in Denver to convene at the Crowne Plaza DIA Convention Center on March 28-30 for the 6th Annual NoCo Hemp Expo. And while tickets are still available for certain events, NoCo6 is nearly sold out.

What began in 2014 as a modest meeting of intrepid Fort Collins-based hemp entrepreneurs has grown into the world’s largest gathering of hemp industry professionals under one roof. Approximately 10,000 visitors are expected from throughout the U.S., as well as over 20 countries.

“We are very excited to welcome visitors from all over the world to this year’s NoCo Hemp Expo,” said Elizabeth (Elizzy) Knight, co-founder of Colorado Hemp Company/We Are for Better Alternatives (WAFBA), producer of NoCo Hemp Expo. “What our small team has created, along with the help of all our supporting exhibitors, sponsors, speakers and other partners, has never been done before. Together, from the ground up, we have created a world-class convention and conference that celebrates all things hemp – from botanicals and CBD to bioplastics and building materials – and that showcases Colorado as a center of the hemp marketplace.”

Hemp producers are feeling bullish in 2019, since the passage of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, better known as the Farm Bill, which legalized the commercial cultivation and sale of industrial hemp, defined as containing less than 0.3% THC. According to Hemp Business Journal’s new report, The Global State of Hemp: 2019 Industry Outlook, U.S. sales of hemp products – from full-spectrum hemp extract and CBD products to hemp foods, textiles, building materials and more – estimated at $1 billion in 2018, are projected to grow 27% annually to reach $2.6 billion by 2022. Global hemp retail sales totaled $3.7 billion in 2018 and are projected to grow to $5.7 billion by 2020.

    Despite Hemp’s Legality, Confusion Abounds

    by Portland Press Herald

Industrial hemp may now be legal to grow and sell in the United States under the 2018 Farm Bill, but there is still a lot of uncertainty out there. Despite hemp’s newly earned legal status, authorities in Oklahoma just last week seized a truckload of hemp, valued at $500,000, headed for a Colorado processing facility. After 11 separate tests confirming that the cargo is indeed hemp and not marijuana, two individuals still remain in jail and officials are now demanding the entire contents of the truck – over 17,000 pounds – be tested for THC content, reported Ganjapreneur on February 5.

The incident, along with another in which an Oregon trucker was arrested in Idaho in late January for transporting hemp to Colorado, is becoming a test case for interstate commerce of industrial hemp. According to the Idaho Press, the federal Farm Bill forbids states from preventing the transportation of hemp, and the Colorado company that wants its seized shipment back from Idaho is citing the Farm Bill in a court filing against the state.

In related news, health officials in the state of Maine on February 1 ordered that all edible products containing cannabidiol, or CBD, must be removed from stores, saying that the hemp-derived ingredient is not a federally approved food additive. Health inspectors began in late January informing businesses that they must remove all foods, tinctures and capsules from their shelves that contain CBD. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services has determined CBD is an unapproved food additive that federal authorities do not recognize as safe. The ruling threatens to derail Maine’s fast-growing hemp industry at a time when the CBD market is poised for explosive growth, reports the Portland Press Herald.

Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner to Facebook: “Stop Hassling Hemp Businesses”

    By Vox, Jan. 7, 2019

Facebook and Google account for 57 percent of the U.S. digital advertising market, according to eMarketer, yet sellers of CBD and related hemp products often find themselves banned from promoting their businesses on these two dominant online advertising platforms. Moreover, some CBD and hemp extract companies are seeing their Facebook pages shut down entirely, as Facebook has been categorizing CBD and hemp businesses as “prescription pharmaceuticals, reports Vox.

Now, the online social media giant is facing blowback for its restrictive policy when it comes to CBD and hemp businesses. In an email this week, according to Vox, Facebook admitted that its team had erroneously removed CBD and hemp pages. “We mistakenly removed Pages for hemp and CBD oil that do not violate our policies and we are currently working to restore these Pages,” a Facebook spokesperson was quoted as saying.

According to Facebook’s Pages-Specific Policies, company pages “must not promote the sale of prescription pharmaceuticals.” Pharmaceuticals are allowed to have Facebook pages, but must first obtain permission from the social media company. Facebook said it did not believe hemp or CBD companies violated any of these terms, but it did not further explain why its team had removed a number of CBD business pages.

In related news, Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Ryan Quarles wrote a letter to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg on behalf of his state’s CBD businesses whose pages were taken down. “America’s hemp farmers and businesses should be celebrated and supported – not hassled – by Facebook and other social media companies,” Quarles wrote in a letter to Zuckerberg dated January 4. “Because hemp products are legal, it is baffling to me that Facebook would attempt to interfere with hemp business owners’ efforts to advertise and communicate with the public about their products,” Quarles wrote.

  • SHE’s writing hemp history in Nashville

SHE’s writing hemp history in Nashville

    by John Dvorak

The Southern Hemp Expo (SHE), held at the Nashville Fairgrounds in September 2018, was organized by Cecily Friday of the Tennessee Cannabis Coalition, Colleen Keahey Lanier, Executive Director of the Hemp Industries Association and hemptrepreneur extraordinaire Morris Beegle.  This trio of thought leaders worked tirelessly to replicate Beegle’s highly successful NOCO Hemp Expo in Tennessee.  They did an excellent job taking care of the speakers and attendees alike.  There was a lot of local media coverage of the Expo as people are realizing the regenerative effect that hemp can have for farmers and the economy.

For me, one of the many highlights was Eli Shalom’s hemp paper making lecture and demonstration.  Eli, who has been producing beautiful craft hemp paper for years, described how hemp fiber and water are added to an oval shaped beater where they go round and round as the fibers are pulled apart, churned and made more pliable.  The beater’s purpose is to macerate the hemp fibers, creating more surface area for them to link together during the papermaking process. The pulpy slurry is spread onto a framed screen where the individual fibers form bonds as the water drains.  Pressure is added to squeeze out excess water resulting in very strong and flexible sheets of hemp paper.

After Eli’s talk, I realized that the SHE was a beater in its own right: thousands of individuals pouring onto the circular trade show floor where 100 vendors stood ready to break open any misconceptions about cannabis hemp.  As people jostled with each other to make their way around, waves of hempformation flowed over them in a frenetic manner. Once this human slurry was mixed, the proto-hempsters poured into the lecture halls where they synergistically coalesced into something that is stronger than each individual.  The speakers acted as pressure that squeezed out misinformation and helped turn concepts into coherent action plans. I was honored to contribute to this effort by giving my Cannabis Curriculum presentation.  People left the Expo unified, strengthened and ready to write their own chapter of hempen history.  Now, I’ll try to turn the page on this tearable hemp paper analogy and get my sheet together.

Similar to what I experienced in Oklahoma recently, Cannabidiol (CBD) has taken the South by storm.  A large majority of vendors at the Expo were promoting this non-intoxicating cannabinoid and with good reason.  Stories abounded of CBD’s healing properties: controlling seizures, relieving pain and anxiety as well as being an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotectant.  A particularly poignant presentation was given by Janel Ralph of Palmetto Harmony who spoke passionately about how CBD has significantly improved the quality of life for her daughter, Harmony.

There were several more traditional hemp merchants there too including Sunstrand, which focuses on the many uses of the hemp stalk, from hurd based particle board to bast fiber insulation.  The humble hemp seed was not forgotten either, as Laura’s Hemp Chocolates and Victory Hemp both had tasty products on display.  Rick Trojan, who MC’d several speaker panels in an easy going and professional manner, was showing off his newly wrapped Hemp Road Trip bus in the SHE parking lot.  Keep an eye out for a tour date near you!

Numerous hemp luminaries were in attendance including Vote Hemp lobbyist Ben Droz, a study in perpetual motion and genuinely kind fellow.  Hemp pioneers Joe Hickey, Craig Lee and John Roulac were there to provide an experienced voice of reason and reality check.  It was encouraging to see a new generation of whole plant cannabis advocates, like Cait Curley, taking up the hempen mantle in an energetic and innovative manner.  I enjoyed finally meeting fellow hempologist, Daniel Isenstein, whose Hemp Highway of Kentucky website really drives home the canna-history of the Bluegrass State.

Ryan Loflin of Rocky Mountain Hemp shared his invaluable lessons learned growing hemp in Colorado while author, goat herder and uber-hempster Doug Fine lent good humor and poignant insights to the proceedings.  Veteran Mike Lewis, founder of the Growing Warriors Project, talked about the challenges and opportunities awaiting members of our armed services.

The ever cheerful Coach Freddie Cecchini was there documenting the event for his ihemp Revolution podcast.  He played his trademark washboard to complement the musical entertainment at the after party which also saw hempentainer and musical muse Aviva Vuvuzela perform her classic song Cannabis Car.  All in all, the Southern Hemp Expo was a resounding success and participants are already looking forward to writing more hemp history at next year’s event.

Former NFL Players and a Fine Man Growing Hemp in George Washington’s Garden Among the Stellar Speakers for the First-Ever Southern Hemp Expo in Nashville

Brightest Lights in Hemp Farming and Business to Ignite the Revolution as the World’s Largest Industrial Hemp Expo Heads to Fairgrounds Nashville, September 28 and 29

Nashville, TN (September 11, 2018) – Former Miami Dolphins left tackle, Jake Long and Super Bowl champion Matt Wilhelm, will be among the hemp pioneers, experts, entrepreneurs and advocates who will gather for the inaugural Southern Hemp Expo (SHE) as Colorado Hemp Company brings its wildly popular NoCo Hemp Expo, the world’s largest industrial hemp exposition held each spring in Colorado, to the Fairgrounds Nashville in Tennessee on September 28 and 29.

“SHE – and the feminine acronym is intentional – will be a who’s who of the hemp industry, which is exploding so quickly it’s tough to keep up,” said NoCo Hemp Expo co-founder and co-producer Morris Beegle. “This is where it all comes together – where the connections are made and the pathways opened to take this industry to the next level.”

Along with hemp advocates Long and Wilhelm, who use CBD for pain, the speaker lineup is packed with hemp industry luminaries offering insight and wisdom on a main stage and during a business conference and agricultural symposium.

Keynote speaker Dean Norton, horticulture director for the historic Mount Vernon estate, will talk about growing hemp at George Washington’s home in Mount Vernon, Virginia, for the first time in 260 years. (He just harvested the first crop.) Cannabis pioneer Doug Fine, an entrepreneur, regenerative farmer, and bestselling author who is a favorite on Conan and Tonight Show, will delight attendees with his stories of hemp from around the world.

Highly anticipated appearances by John Roulac, Founder of Nutiva, and Janel Ralph, CEO of Palmetto Harmony, will engage the audience with their industry expertise in speaking sessions on both days of the Expo.

Entrepreneurs like Artisan Hemp founder Elishewa Shalom, Vicente Sederberg LLC founder Sally Peebles, Satya Kama founder Shadi Ramey, Hempcrete builder Eric McKee, hempologist John Dvorak, Functional Remedies president Tim Gordon, Apeks Supercritical founder Andy Joseph, and WillPower founder Will Carr, among many others, will share what it takes to make it to the top of an industry even as it’s being born.

Based on the sold-out fifth annual NoCo Hemp Expo in April, the need for this type of knowledge sharing and networking in the hemp industry is deep. “George Washington famously said, ‘Make the most of the Indian hemp seed and sow it everywhere,’” Beegle said. “We will be doing just that.”

Inaugural Southern Hemp Expo, Announces Presenting Sponsor Bluhen Botanicals

The First Annual Southern Hemp Expo to Feature Exhibit Hall, Networking Opportunities, and Presentations and Workshops by Pioneers, Innovators, Entrepreneurs and Activists in the Rapidly Expanding Hemp Industry at The Fairgrounds Nashville, Sept. 28-29, 2018

Nashville, TN — (ReleaseWire) — 08/29/2018 –The Southern United States is rapidly emerging as an epicenter of industrial hemp production, and the producers of NoCo Hemp Expo – the world’s largest hemp exposition held each Spring in Colorado – are celebrating this fact by launching the first annual Southern Hemp Expo this fall in Nashville, TN, to serve the burgeoning Southern region and to promote innovation in the market for all things hemp.

On the heels of its sold-out, over-capacity show drawing more than 6,000 attendees and 150 diverse exhibitors, the Colorado-based NoCo Hemp Expo is taking the momentum southeast, launching the Inaugural Southern Hemp Expo (SHE), Sept. 28-29, 2018, at The Fairgrounds Nashville.

    Presenting Sponsor Blühen Botanicals

In addition to a broad group of Sponsor and Exhibitor Partners, Tennessee hometown hero Blühen Botanicals will be featured as the Presenting Sponsor of Southern Hemp Expo. The two-day conference and exposition is open to entrepreneurs, business leaders, investors, manufacturers, producers, agriculturalists and consumers interested in products made from hemp and full spectrum hemp extract.

Founded by a dedicated team of Knoxville, TN-based entrepreneurs, soil scientists, farmers and hemp advocates, Blühen Botanicals’ state-of-the-art, industrial hemp processing facility will be able to process 2,000 pounds of hemp biomass per day, with the potential to rapidly scale output beyond that capacity to create jobs and help Tennessee farmers grow a traditional cash crop well suited to the region.

“The CBD oil industry is virtually unknown to the vast majority of U.S. consumers, and we’re excited to be on the leading edge in the Southeast,” said Joe Fox, one of the partners behind Blühen Botanicals. “It has great potential to help millions of people with pain and anxiety and a myriad of other health issues. As this year’s Presenting Sponsor, we’re also delighted to welcome members of the hemp industry to the Southern Hemp Expo,” he said.

According to Fox, Blühen Botanicals, based in Knoxville, TN, will be the largest hemp biomass processing and extraction facility in Tennessee and one of the largest in the Southeast. Blühen Botanicals is projected to employ two dozen people within two years and expand its number of farming partners to grow high-yield industrial hemp crops, says Fox. The company also is exploring partnerships with universities around the country to further expand hemp genetics research and development. Visit www.bluhenbotanicals.com.

    Hemp Industry Juggernaut

With skyrocketing popularity of hemp for food, fiber, and its therapeutic non-psychoactive cannabinoid CBD, domestic production of hemp, or cannabis sativa, is reaching new heights. U.S. hemp-based product sales grew 16% to reach $820 million in sales in 2017 and is expected to surpass $1 billion in sales in 2018, led primarily by hemp-derived CBD, food, personal care and industrial products, according to the publication Hemp Business Journal – a number not lost on politicians. This past spring, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) introduced the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which would remove hemp from the federal list of controlled substances and allow it to be sold as an agricultural crop.

“The South is emerging as a leader in hemp production, and there’s never been a more exciting time in our industry,” said Colorado Hemp Company co-founder Morris Beegle, producer of SHE and NoCo Hemp Expo. “Hemp innovation is taking off, and legislative reform is around the corner,” Beegle said. “SHE will provide an important forum for regenerative, organic agriculture and a festive and effective venue for expanding crucial dialogue in the exploding commercial hemp products market.”

Other Sponsors for the Southern Hemp Expo include: GenCanna, Kat’s Naturals, LabCanna, Lilu’s Gardens, Softgel Co., Bluebird Botanicals, ProVerde Labs, Kazmira, Anavii Market, Bish Equipment, WillPower Products, Restorative Botanicals, Colorado Hemp Project, Palmetto Harmony, Hempsac, The Hemp Road Trip, and Silver Mountain Hemp Guitars. SOUTHERN ACCENTS: Wildly Successful NoCo Hemp Expo Puts Down Roots in Tennessee

Loveland, CO – July 10, 2018 – On the heels of its sold-out, over-capacity show drawing more than 6,000 attendees and 150 diverse exhibitors, the Colorado-based NoCo Hemp  Expo is taking the party south and east, launching the Inaugural Southern Hemp Expo (SHE), Sept. 28-29, 2018, at The Fairgrounds Nashville in Nashville, TN.

“The South is a leader and will continue to be a leader in hemp production, and we are very excited to bring this dynamic gathering of industry movers and shakers to the region,” said Colorado Hemp Company co-founder Morris Beegle, producer of NoCo Hemp Expo, who also noted the theme of the inaugural SHE event is “Bringing Balance Back to Mother Earth.”

“The 2018 NoCo Hemp Expo was far and away the biggest and best hemp event we have produced yet,” Beegle continued. “The interest level for this plant and all that it can do is overwhelming. We are excited to launch this expo in the Eastern U.S. With the first annual SHE event in Nashville in September and NoCo6 in Denver in March, our shows are firmly grounded in the country’s strongest regions for hemp production.”

With rising acceptance and popularity of hemp for food, fiber, and its therapeutic nonpsychoactive cannabinoid CBD, domestic production of hemp, or cannabis sativa, is reaching new heights. U.S. hemp-based product sales grew 16% to reach $820 million in sales in 2017  nd is expected to surpass $1 billion in sales in 2018, led primarily by hemp-derived CBD, food, personal care and industrial products, according to the publication Hemp Business

    The Feminine Touch

SHE – feminine acronym intended – will offer networking opportunities, presentations and workshops by pioneers, innovators and activists including the leading women and business professionals in industrial hemp. The fifth annual NoCo Hemp Expo in Loveland, Colo., in April, featured keynote speaker, activist and hemp entrepreneur Winona LaDuke, who illuminated hemp’s value in driving a new economy for rural and Native American communities. Other keynotes featured were Nature’s Path Foods founder Arran Stephens, who discussed why he’s been investing in farmland to cultivate organic hemp.

“I was amazed at the buzz of the show,” said Arran Stephens, co-founder and co-CEO of Nature’s Path Foods and a keynote speaker at the recent NoCo 5 event. “In some ways, it reminded me of the spirit of the early organic food trade shows. This is really the beginning of a strong new movement.”

“Hemp production is taking off so fast, and law reform is so close” Beegle said. “There’s never been a more exciting time in this industry, and SHE provides a festive and effective forum for expanding crucial dialogue about the latest developments and opportunities in the commercial hemp products market.”

  • “We Need a Bigger Boat!” 5th Annual NoCo Hemp Expo Sells Out, Will Move to Larger Venue Next Year

“We Need a Bigger Boat!” 5th Annual NoCo Hemp Expo Sells Out, Will Move to Larger Venue Next Year

6,000 People Came to Network, Learn, and Play at the High-Energy, Jam-Packed 2018 NoCo Hemp Expo Highlighting the Latest Innovations, Market Research and Opportunities in Industrial Hemp, Held April 6-7, 2018, at The Ranch Events Center in Loveland, CO

Loveland, CO (April 11, 2018) – Attracting a sold-out crowd of 6,000 attendees – 1,300 more than last year – and more than 150 diverse exhibitors, the 5th Annual NoCo Hemp Expo has come a long way since its humble beginning as a gathering of 350 enthusiasts in 2014. The premier show serving the $2 billion hemp industry has grown so much, in fact, that it will move to a larger convention center in the Denver area on March 29-30, 2019.

“The 2018 NoCo Hemp Expo was far and away the biggest and best hemp event we have produced yet,” said NoCo Hemp Expo Co-founder Morris Beegle. “The interest level for this plant and all that it can do was overwhelming. Next year’s NoCo6 event will be moved to a new location. As the great Sheriff Brody once said, ‘We’re going to need a bigger boat!’”

Recognized by the Hemp Industries Association as the “Hemp Event of the Year,” NoCo draws professionals from the agricultural, industrial, nutritional, therapeutic and fashion hemp industries as well as policymakers and nonprofits spearheading legislative reform around hemp. Just one week before the Expo took place, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), along with Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rand Paul (R-KY) announced the planned introduction of the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which would remove hemp from the list of controlled substances and allow it to be sold as an agricultural commodity.

This year the NoCo Hemp Expo expanded into an additional building for a one-day Hemp Summit for entrepreneurs and investors on Friday, April 6, followed by a one-day Farm & Agriculture Symposium for farmers and producers on Saturday, April 7. In addition, consumers navigated crowded aisles to learn about everything from hemp toilet paper to CBD, hemp’s wildly popular non-psychoactive cannabinoid. Standing-room-only crowds reacted enthusiastically to a diverse and comprehensive lineup of speakers – 25 percent more programming than the year before. For fun, Denver-based WillPower Products teamed up with Apollo Flight Labs to provide an exclusive Jet Pack demonstration.

“I was amazed at the buzz of the show,” said Arran Stephens, co-founder and co-CEO of Nature’s Path Foods and a keynote speaker at the event. “In some ways, it reminded me of the spirit of the early organic food trade shows. This is really the beginning of a strong new movement.”

The 6th Annual NoCo Hemp Expo will be held March 29-30, 2019 at a larger convention center in the Denver area. For information, visit www.NoCoHempExpo.com.

NoCo Hemp Expo Returns for Fifth Year This April

While confusion continues to swirl around the 4/20 rally at Civic Center Park, plans for another cannabis festival held every April in Colorado are humming right along. The NoCo Hemp Expo will return to Loveland on April 6 and April 7, and its organizer expects it to be bigger than ever.

“We had some space issues and were packed to the gills last year, so we added another building,” explains NoCo Hemp founder Morris Beegle, who says the event’s programming has increased about 25 percent over last year. “It’s going to have more speakers and more exhibitors.”

Beegle estimates that anywhere from 5,500 to 6,000 people will attend this year’s expo at the Ranch Events Complex in Loveland, where they’ll dive into two days of nearly sixty featured speakers, 150 exhibitions and the expo’s first ever farmer symposium. There will also be an expanded programming for high-end investors and CEOs in the hemp industry, according to Beegle.

Keynote speakers include Nature’s Path founder Arran Stevens, Nutiva founder John Rulac and Winona La Duke, executive director of Native American activism group Honor the Earth. “Stevens doesn’t speak very often. To have him keynote the summit this year is a big pull for our industry,” Beegle says.

NoCo Hemp Expo founder Morris Beegle at the 2016 convention.
NoCo Hemp Expo founder Morris Beegle at the 2016 convention.

“This is is definitely going to have more of a farm and [agriculture] feel than it has in the past, as well as more regenerative farming,” he continues. “In the past, it was more general products-oriented. Not that we weren’t going for farmers, but adding the farm and ag symposium adds more of a farm feel.” And like past expos, this year’s will have plenty of food trucks, hemp-based treats and live entertainment.

The expo has seen a rise in popularity with the fast emergence of CBD as well as more states legalizing industrial hemp farming. That movement has sped up as confusion over legalized psychoactive cannabis and hemp cultivation is cleared up.

In 2015, the NoCo Hemp Expo was almost compromised when the Larimer County Sheriff’s Department claimed the expo couldn’t have hemp plants or germinating seeds on the premises without being shut down. The expo eventually went on as planned, though, and Beegle says that he and Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith have ironed out those issues. “They were really nice last year,” Beegle says of Larimer County law enforcement. “We’ve educated them, and they’ve been supportive of everything. We’re just building on what we’ve done in the past, and it’s been working.

The NoCo Hemp Expo will be held on Friday, April 6, and Saturday, April 7, at the Ranch Events Complex, 5280 Arena Circle in Loveland. Tickets start at $15 for general admission on Saturday; VIP, business-to-business and other special packages are available. Learn more on the NoCo Hemp Expo website.

Presenting Sponsor PureHemp Technology Announced for Fifth Annual NoCo Hemp Expo

Loveland, CO (January 30, 2018) – The Fifth Annual NoCo Hemp Expo (NoCo5) announces Fort Lupton, CO-based PureHemp Technology as this year’s Presenting Sponsor for the two-day gathering of industrial hemp thought leaders, speakers, entrepreneurs, and exhibitors taking place April 6-7, 2018, at the Ranch Events Complex in Loveland, CO.

Featuring an expanded Hemp Summit, new Farm and Agricultural Symposium, a Global Hemp Village and two interactive exhibition halls, this year’s NoCo5 is set to be the largest on record. Recognized by the Hemp Industries Association as the “Hemp event of the year,” sponsors for this year’s event span across market leaders in production, manufacturing, and distributing of industrial hemp related products.

Nearly three-dozen states have passed legislation in recent years allowing research or commercial production of industrial hemp, the non-psychoactive cousin to marijuana. From hemp extract products now being sold online and in a growing number of natural products stores to food, fiber, cosmetics, textiles, paper, animal feed and construction materials and more, industrial hemp sales totaled $688 million in 2016, led by hemp food, body care and hemp extract rich in cannabinoid compounds, or “CBD” products.

PureHemp TechnoloyPureHemp Technology is this year’s NoCo5 presenting and leading sponsor that has been an innovator in the production, branding and marketing of industrial hemp products. PureHemp’s sister company, Pure Kind Botanicals, produces and markets a growing line of premium, full spectrum, cannabinoid-infused products for the wellness industry.

“We at PureHemp are proud and honored to represent the entire hemp community at the Fifth Annual NoCo Hemp Expo,” says Ed Lehrburger, Founder and Executive Manager of PureHemp Technology and Pure Kind Botanicals. “All of us in the greater domestic hemp community can honestly say we are successfully growing the U.S. hemp industry.”

PureHemp Technology has been advancing a patented hemp refinery technology that rapidly converts hemp stalks into pulp, lignin, and sugars that can be used to manufacture thousands of unique hemp-based products. Based on years of R&D and favorable results, PureHemp has a rich history partnering with other companies and advancing unique hemp initiatives.

For example, PureHemp was approached last year by a Canadian company looking for a technology company capable of producing sugars from hemp stalks that can be fermented into a high-quality beer. In 2017, PureHemp successfully completed a Phase I proof-of-concept program and is currently engaged in a Phase II program to refine specific recipes for producing a high quality, 100% hemp beer product.
