  • 2nd Annual SLV Hemp Symposium Returns to Adams State University

2nd Annual SLV Hemp Symposium Returns to Adams State University

Bringing hemp education, economics, and environmental information to Alamosa Colorado and the San Luis Valley.

Education is Power! Come network and learn from like-minded individuals in the hemp industry.

As the hemp industry further demonstrates its potential to create new job markets, revolutionize our economy, and prove to be both nutritionally and environmentally beneficial, Colorado universities are realizing the need to incorporate hemp into higher education.

The Second Annual San Luis Valley (SLV) Hemp Symposium will take place on Friday, November 10, on the (ASU) campus in Alamosa, Colorado. This year’s symposium, taking place in the Student Union building, is presented by International Hemp Solutions and features Let’s Talk Hemp, an all-day speaker series and exhibitor expo. The symposium covers a wide range of hemp topics including legislation and regulation, best farming practices, technology, hemp foods & nutrition, marketing your hemp business in today’s environment, and more. Panel members include industry experts and entrepreneurs such as, Tim Gordon from COHIA (Colorado Hemp Industries Association), Tom Dermody from Industrial Hemp Research Foundation, Alan Parsons from Power Zone, Morris Beegle of NoCo Hemp Expo, Bob Hoban from Hoban Law Group, Terry Moran from the Colorado Department of Agriculture, and Ryan Loflin, the first US farmer in 50+ years to successfully plant, grow, and harvest a commercial scale hemp crop in 2013 before it was federally allowed via the 2014 Farm Bill.

Symposium host, ASU, illustrates the importance of having education and research grow simultaneously with infrastructure. Having launched their Industrial Hemp Initiative this July, ASU aims to create an SLV Viable Hemp Seed Program and to develop a large-scale, hemp-based economy in the San Luis Valley. The initiative focuses on what ASU President, Beverlee J. McClure, calls the four E’s: Economy, Environment, Education, and Entrepreneurship.

Tickets are an affordable $10 for the Let’s Talk Hemp speaker series and free to walk through the mini-expo featuring 15-20 hemp based companies and organizations. Tickets are easily purchased on-line via the SLV Hemp Symposium TICKET SALES webpage.

  • THC-Limits for Hemp Hurt the Industry and the Environment

THC-Limits for Hemp Hurt the Industry and the Environment

Hemp is arguably the most versatile plant on the planet. It is well documented that hemp can be used to make things like paper and rope, but hemp can also do so much more.

The hemp plant can be used to make fuel in the form of bio-diesel. It can also be used to make medicine. A team of scientists even built a super-capacitor out of hemp. A super-capacitor is an energy storage device, like a battery.

Hemp has been prohibited in the United States since 1937, but a 2014 Farm Bill provided for exceptions in states that have legalized hemp for research and/or pilot program purposes.

To date, 31 states have passed such laws according to the organization Vote Hemp. Hemp production has taken off in many states, with states like Kentucky nearly tripling production in 2017 (a total of 12,800 acres).

The spread of hemp reform has been paralleled by an increase in public awareness about the wellness benefits of cannabidiol (CBD), which is found in abundance in hemp plants.

  • NoCo Hemp Expo showcases region as leader in hemp industry

NoCo Hemp Expo showcases region as leader in hemp industry

    By Jensen Werley —

LOVELAND  — The NoCo Hemp Expo returns this weekend and will host feature some of the first U.S.-built equipment necessary for the fledgling industry.

The festival will take place Friday and Saturday, March 31 and April 1, at The Ranch Events Complex in Loveland.

About 4,000 people are expected to come to the fourth annual event, Morris Beegle, festival organizer and founder of Colorado Hemp Co., told BizWest.

In addition to being larger than last year — about 3,000 people came in 2016, Beegle said — a new feature this year will be a tent designated for hemp artists and activists.

Another new addition will be a showcase for hemp equipment, including some of the first production equipment built in the United States.

The GrassHopper, made by Power Zone Equipment, collects and stores profitable hemp. It is the first of its kind to be built stateside — in Center, Colo. — and is directly attributed to Colorado’s growing hemp industry.

Having agricultural equipment at the Expo will be a chance to showcase innovations in agriculture because of hemp.

“Farming equipment and technology is something we have to figure out as a fledgling industry,” Beegle said. “It’s exciting to have a company like Power Zone, with the ability to make most anything, looking for new opportunities and excited about hemp.”

Beegle said as this type of farming grows, the processing side will take off, so farmers have a place where they can bring their crop and have it processed.

Because Amendment 64 opened the door for hemp production when it legalized recreational marijuana use in Colorado, the state is a leader in the farming practice, hence the need for and growth of events like the Hemp Expo.

“Colorado is a leader in industrial hemp now,” Beegle said. “Amendment 64 allowed us to get a head start on everyone else. It’s a natural draw to Colorado and brings attention to North Colorado. This area has really embraced hemp.”

Registration for the event is available here.

  • NoCo Hemp Expo and Strategic Partners Head to #HempOnTheHill

NoCo Hemp Expo and Strategic Partners Head to #HempOnTheHill

Northern Colorado leads the way to advocate for industrial hemp in Washington, DC

Loveland, CO — (ReleaseWire) — 02/27/2017 –The NoCo Hemp Expo, the largest hemp-centric event in the U.S., will represent and advocate for the nation’s industrial hemp industry at Hemp on the Hill Tuesday, February 28, 2017. This expo and conversation is hosted by Congressman Jared Polis, with Co-hosts Congressmen Massie, Comer, Blumenauer, and Honorary Co-Host Senator Wyden. The event will be held at the Rayburn Foyer, 45 Independence Avenue SW in Washington, DC, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

“We are honored to be part of this effort to educate our leaders and to do away with outdated and misinterpreted federal regulations governing industrial hemp,” said NoCo Hemp Expo Founder Morris Beegle. “We value the efforts of Congressman Polis and his congressional colleagues to advocate for industrial hemp as the viable, sustainable, job-creating industry it can be.”

The gathering is an opportunity for hemp producers to showcase their products and the value their businesses provide to the economy, locally, regionally, and nationally. The event brings together policy makers and business leaders in industrial hemp. By demonstrating the varied uses of industrial hemp and showing the diverse economic benefits the industry provides, organizers hope more legislators will join the effort to help propel the crop to be regulated by the department of agriculture at the federal level, just like corn, soy, and wheat.

“Current federal prohibitions on industrial hemp stifle innovation and job growth, and hamstring efforts of agricultural and product development experts to diversify their efforts and compete on the global stage,” Beegle added. “The entire hemp plant, including ALL parts, compounds and constituents, is a healthy, safe, environmentally beneficial, ag-crop with the potential to create thousands of domestic products, hundreds of thousands of jobs, and generate substantial revenue and tax proceeds. We need federal regulations to change and remove unnecessary red tape that currently hampers the industry.”

Morris noted that industrial hemp, which as a crop provides the raw material for a broad spectrum of uses, including construction, nutrition, textiles, and therapeutic uses, has long been inappropriately categorized and stigmatized by the mis-perception that it is the same as marijuana. “While it’s all cannabis, hemp is not marijuana, it has little to no THC, it is not psychoactive, it is not a drug, and has never qualified to be a Schedule 1 or any schedule on the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Naturally occurring cannabinoids and other compounds, including cannabidiol or CBD, can be used for nutritional, wellness, nutraceutical, and medicinal products that have legitimate therapeutic uses. It’s important that we differentiate hemp and marijuana as the DEA and FDA continue to muddy the waters with ‘alternative facts’ and overreaching inaccurate statements pertaining to hemp and the medicinal properties related to cannabidiol / CBD.”

Beegle will be accompanied by several of NoCo Hemp Expo’s key strategic partners, including author and hemp evangelist Doug Fine and leading cannabis law firm the Hoban Law Group. Also attending will be Tim Gordon and Preston Whitfield from CBDRx, Sean Murphy of Hemp Business Journal, Rick Trojan of the Hemp Road Trip, Samantha Walsh and Michael Bowman of National Hemp Association, Colleen Keahey of Hemp Industries Association, and Eric Steenstra of VoteHemp. Additional hemp companies and stakeholders will also be represented at #HempOnTheHill.

Most of these key Expo partners will be speaking at NoCo Hemp Expo 4, March 31 and April 1, 2017 in Loveland Colorado. Expo events include two full expo halls; a dedicated business/industry day; the Hemp Summit with CannaPro Series for attorneys, accountants and professional services; Fashion Alley; an Artists & Activists Tent; as well as expert speakers, workshops, demonstrations, and countless other educational and networking opportunities including a post-expo concert. • NoCo Hemp Expo 4 Presenting Sponsor Returns

NoCo Hemp Expo 4 Presenting Sponsor Returns

Exhibitor space has sold out; a few sponsor opportunities remain.

Loveland, CO — (ReleaseWire) — 02/07/2017 –The NoCo Hemp Expo, the largest hemp-centric event in the U.S., has announced the return of CBDRx as presenting sponsor, the sellout of its available exhibit space and most of its sponsorship packages. To buy tickets to the March 31-April 1 event, visit our website.

“Our event, and the hemp industry, has built tremendous momentum over the last few years,” said Expo Founder Morris Beegle. “That, combined with some uncertainty in the current political realm, is creating more interest than ever in the work we’re doing to teach people about and support industrial hemp.”

The U.S. consumes $580 million in products made from imported hemp annually, but regulations that make it challenging to grow and process the crop mean that jobs and revenue related to hemp production and processing go to the 30 countries that grow it without burdensome government regulations. Hemp farmers in Canada are finding they get better return per acre than most any other commonly grown grain.

Where other nations are moving forward to support and expand growing this important crop, the U.S. seems to be moving backwards. In particular, Hoban Law Group filed suit last month opposing a DEA decision to codify all cannabinoids derived from marijuana or hemp as Schedule I controlled substances.

“We’re paying a huge price because bureaucrats who don’t know the industry and its value lump hemp and marijuana – and all cannabinoids – together,” notes Beegle. “Hemp-derived cannabinoids have proven therapeutic and nutritional value and are not psychoactive. Those who represent us and refuse to acknowledge that threaten a myriad of businesses and jobs across the country, and deny hard-working U.S. citizens the significant opportunity to create jobs and revenue.”

NoCo Hemp Expo 4 Harvest Sponsors include EnerHealth Botanicals and Sub-Zero Extracts. Hemp Summit Sponsors include Canna Pro Series, Hemp Biz Journal and Hoban Law Group. • Let American Farmers Grow Hemp Once Again to Create Jobs and Rebuild the Rural Economy, Petition 2-11-2017

Let American Farmers Grow Hemp Once Again to Create Jobs and Rebuild the Rural Economy, Petition 2-11-2017

    NHA Hemp Blog, Editorial

It’s a natural state of affairs that as time moves on and human society progresses, there’s a tendency for industries to come and go. We learn new things and develop new technologies and, as a result, certain industries fade out and new ones take their place. Areas with diverse economies based off of multiple industries can usually weather these storms, but it can be harder for rural economies that are often small in scale and tend to lack that diversity. The impact can be severe, leading to limited job prospects, poverty, and sometimes the dissolution of small communities that once thrived.

This is particularly true of certain rural farming and mining communities that have been reliant upon industries such as tobacco farming and coal mining. Over the years we have learned quite a bit about the health hazards of tobacco and the negative environmental and health effects of the coal industry. That knowledge combined with changing market forces have led to reduced jobs and subsequent negative impacts on affected communities. In such situations, it’s wise to have the foresight to seek out new industries to replace the old. In this particular case, I argue not for a new industry, but for the return of an old one, unfairly maligned and of great potential value for our economy.

Hemp is not marijuana. The two are “significantly differentiated at a genome-wide level.”1 Legally, the distinction is in the content of the psychoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In Canada, the maximum THC content of hemp is 0.3%.2  In the US, after the Controlled Substances Act (1970), “hemp is no longer recognized as being distinct” from marijuana, regardless of THC content.3

Botanically, there are several variants of Cannabis, though there is disagreement on exactly how to classify them. All contain cannabinoids, though not all are psychoactive. The two major types of cannabinoids are THC and an anti-psychoactive cannabinoid known as CBD. The type of cannabis that is high in THC and low in CBD is known as marijuana and the type that is low in THC and high in CBD in known as hemp.4

Hemp is produced for its fiber and oil rather than for its flowers and has an extensive history as a cash crop, not just in the US, but worldwide. In our country’s past, it was used primarily to make rope, but also cloth and paper. Today it is used for those things, but also for health foods, body care products, clothing, auto parts, construction materials, biofuels, plastic composites, and more. The wide variety of uses for hemp give it great potential as a modern cash crop. It has particular promise to supplement or replace tobacco as a cash crop in regions such as Kentucky where tobacco has predominated for years, particularly since government support for growing tobacco ended in 2004.5 In addition, there are environmental benefits since hemp is well suited as a rotation crop, can be grown without pesticides, and is a high yield crop.6

Some law enforcement officials argue that farmers could hide marijuana plants in their hemp fields, however with cross pollination being an issue, this is not something that farmers would be likely to try. The hemp plants cross pollinating with the marijuana plants would lead to marijuana with reduced THC content, with is an undesirable consequence.6 Also, marijuana plants are typically planted further apart than hemp plants to encourage the growth of their leaves & flowers, whereas hemp plants are typically grown closer together as the stalks are what is of primary value.7 Finally, as marijuana itself becomes decriminalized from state to state, the issue is increasingly benign.

There are two bipartisan bills in congress that would bring back hemp farming and rural jobs. It is our wish that President Trump would work with congress to pass hemp legislation in 2017. Please see the petition below to lend your support to that cause.

Hemp Road Trip: Bringing Back the Local Farmer

Rick Trojan and his team at The Hemp Road Trip rally for change, supporting farmers and informing citizens about the importance of The Industrial Hemp Farming Act.

    By: Thomas Ivory, Jr.

Traveling America in a B100 biodiesel short-bus decorated with “What can hemp do…” graphics and a fine looking man in a sport-coat behind the steering-wheel can be quite adventurous. Venturing from Denver, Colorado, towards Eastern America, this road trip has one purpose: to educate U.S. citizens about hemp

“The initial course was 4 months, and we left January 28th,” said Rick Trojan, Hemp Road Trip founder, speaker, and driver. “We wanted to go around to talk with people and start educating, on a grassroots level, about this (hemp) plant and this crop… We have met people from farmers, to students, to teachers, to just regular citizens.”

The intent, also, is to get Industrial Hemp recognized on a political level. “The original plan was to follow the presidential primaries,” said Trojan. “We went to Iowa, and then we ended up in New Hampshire during their primaries. We went to Washington D.C., and then down to the Carolinas during their primaries. That was the initial flow, to follow the primaries. But then, as we got on the road, we let serendipity take its course, and we started meeting people here and there. So we adapted our schedule, to keep it fluid.”

Trojan added, “Convincing politicians to come on board (being pro-hemp) is critical to the passing of the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, which is what we’re focusing on this year, for 2016.”

Legislation concerning Industrial Hemp has been around for a while. The Hemp Road Trip strives toward creating awareness and support for these proposals.

“There are a couple of bills in front of the House and the Senate, at the moment, having to do with hemp – whether its CBD specific bills or whether its the Industrial Hemp Farming Act – which are the House Bill H.R. 525 and Senate Bill 134,” said Trojan. “And these bills have been proposed for the past 10 years. Essentially, what they would do is take hemp off the controlled substance act – de-schedule hemp –meaning hemp would no longer be considered a drug… Another bill, presented by Bernie Sanders, Senate Bill 2237, would actually declassify cannabis in general.”

This political movement would help American farmers have more agricultural options. “We’re finding: farmers want something different to plant,” said Trojan.

“Having this as an option, I mean, not all farmers are going to plant hemp. Just like not all farmers plant corn, or soy, or cotton. Farmers are going to find what works for them. But they need to have this arrow in their quiver, if you will.”

For Industrial Hemp to be a concern for politicians, they need to know it is a concern for the people who elected them. “The politicians are for their constituents,” said Trojan. “They have 100 things on their plate. They deal with things they hear from their constituents. So, that has really been our focus: to get people to call their elected officials, on a State and Federal level, to let them know about hemp… Hearing from the people themselves, if we truly want to treat this as a democracy and exercise our right as citizens, we should take the time to call or e-mail our representatives to let them know that this (illegalization of hemp) law needs to be changed.”

Trojan added. “We’re focusing on the Industrial Hemp Farming Act because at the moment it has the most momentum, from my view.”

Momentum on a political level begins with proper knowledge and education from the citizens. “80 years of misinformation has been intentionally presented,” said Trojan. “It is time to get the misinformation out and the correct information in, and then people can choose what they want… With the Internet, it is such a valuable resource. People can educate themselves and be an activist. If only on this one issue, they would have done a good deed – a good deed for themselves, their families, their country, and the economy. I think it just makes sense to educate themselves, and to talk to friends and family, and to talk to their legislatures (about legalizing Industrial Hemp).”

By the 1st of April, the B100 short-bus and Hemp Road Trip will return to Colorado for NoCo3 Hemp Expo, completing the first phase of the trip. The second phase, which will begin sometime in April, includes western America: Nebraska, California, and Washington state.

To view Hemp Road Trip photos (of two brought along hemp-based US flags unraveled in front of State Houses, and with several presidential candidates), informative Industrial Hemp links and resources, and to donate to the road trip cause, visit: www.hemproadtrip.com.

And visit your State website for information on how to contact your local representative and congressperson.

“We should allow our farmers to get hemp in the ground and bring back the local farmer and the family farmer,” said Trojan. “We (Hemp Road Trip) will continue on our quest to educate the people.”

CBD Herbal Elixir Bar Featured at NoCo Hemp Expo

On April 1st-2nd at the NoCo Hemp Expo, The Apothecary will be featuring their Herbal Synergy Elixir Bar, but this weekend they are focusing on hemp. They will be serving herbal-infused probiotic drinks all weekend in addition to their other products. On Friday night, The Spagyric Apothecary will have eight different herbal infusions, four of which will have 15-20 mg CBD to sample during the National Hemp Association’s Networking Event. This will be a time to try out a blend and see how it makes you feel, but most of all to see if it works for you.

They have worked hard on developing these blends to maximize effectiveness for all of hemp’s different uses as a dietary supplement. Since CBD works on so many areas of the body, they have combined it with other plants high in CBD-like chemicals, vitamins and antioxidants. In this way, they are focusing the cannabinoids in hemp to act on certain areas of the body. The synergy of fusing high-CBD hemp with different herbs creates something more powerful than any herb by itself.

Check out the Elixir Bar Menu below and be sure to stop by booth #73 during Friday or Saturday for a sample.

Colorado Companies Head to Washington DC for Hemp on the Hill

Jared PolisCongressman Jared Polis (CO.2) will host the “Industrial Hemp Expo and Conversation” on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 on Capitol Hill. The Expo will feature key industry speakers, leading hemp companies, and state and federal officials who are coming together to discuss hemp and its remarkable industrial advancements in recent years.

Colorado, Kentucky, Oregon, Tennessee, Indiana, Virginia, and North Carolina have become leaders in the hemp movement in recent years making progress at the state level by taking advantage of federal legalization opportuni
ties provided in the 2014 Farm Bill.

These states make up the heart of the hemp industry and are host to some of the most amazing individuals working hard to legitimize and fully legalize industrial hemp on the federal level.

According to The Hemp Business Journal, market research puts the U.S. hemp industry at approximately $500 million in sales for year ending 2014. Market research also suggests a nearly $2 billion hemp industry by 2020.

“Hemp is an agricultural crop that can benefit local economies across the country, and a crop that never should have been illegal in the first place. Hemp is not a drug, and should have zero association or interference from the DEA or FDA.” —Morris Beegle, Founder @ Colorado Hemp Company and The NoCo Hemp Expo.

“I’m looking forward to joining my fellow hemp constituents in Washington DC at Hemp on the Hill,” says Beegle, “and convincing members of Congress to finally jump on board and do the right thing, pull hemp completely off of the controlled substances list.“
