Hemp for Victory
Inaugural Southern Hemp Expo, Sept. 28-29, 2018, in Nashville, TN, Builds on Success of Burgeoning Industrial Hemp Market
Inaugural Southern Hemp Expo to Offer Full-scale Exhibit Hall, Ag Symposium, Presentations and Workshops in the Rapidly Expanding Hemp Industry at The Fairgrounds Nashville, Sept. 28-29, 2018
Nashville, TN – August 15, 2018 – The Southern United States is rapidly emerging as an epicenter of industrial hemp production, and the producers of NoCo Hemp Expo – the world’s largest hemp exposition held each spring in Colorado – are celebrating this fact by launching the first annual Southern Hemp Expo this Fall in Nashville, TN, to serve the burgeoning Southern region and to promote innovation in the market for all things hemp.
On the heels of its sold-out show drawing more than 6,000 attendees and 150 diverse exhibitors,On the heels of its sold-out show drawing more than 6,000 attendees and 150 diverse exhibitors, the Colorado-based NoCo Hemp Expo is taking the momentum south and east, launching the Inaugural Southern Hemp Expo (SHE), Sept. 28-29, 2018, at The Fairgrounds Nashville in Nashville, TN.
“The South is a significant leader in hemp production, and we are very excited to bring this dynamic gathering of industry thought-leaders to the region,” said Colorado Hemp Company co-founder Morris Beegle, producer of SHE and NoCo Hemp Expo, who also noted a central theme of the event, that has a heavy programming emphasis on sustainable, organic and regenerative agriculture, is “Bringing Balance Back to Mother Earth.”
Hemp Industry Juggernaut
With rising acceptance and popularity of hemp for food, fiber, and its therapeutic non-psychoactive cannabinoid CBD, domestic production of hemp, or cannabis sativa, is reaching new heights. U.S. hemp-based product sales grew 16% to reach $820 million in sales in 2017 and is expected to surpass $1 billion in sales in 2018, led primarily by hemp-derived CBD, food, personal care, and industrial products, according to the publication Hemp Business Journal – a number not lost on politicians. This past spring, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) introduced the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, which would remove hemp from the federal list of controlled substances and allow it to be sold as an agricultural crop.
“Hemp production is taking off so fast, and law reform is so close” Beegle said. “There’s never been a more exciting time in this industry, and SHE provides a festive and effective forum for expanding crucial dialogue about the latest developments and opportunities in the commercial hemp products market.”
Educational Program, Exhibitors Present Full Spectrum of Hemp
The Southern Hemp Expo will feature a full-day Hemp Business Conference for company owners, entrepreneurs, policymakers, innovators, and investors. In addition, an Agricultural Symposium for farmers and producers, and a full-scale exhibit hall for trade and consumer visitors featuring cutting edge products derived from hemp, the non-psychoactive cousin of marijuana. Products include full-spectrum hemp extract supplements, foods, body care, pet care, building materials, hemp plastics and composites, apparel, bags and backpacks, paper products, guitars, and hemp novelty items. In addition, social activities will provide ample opportunities for networking.
Lead Sponsors and Partners for the inaugural Southern Hemp Expo include: ProVerde Laboratories, Softgel Co., Bluebird Botanicals, Vicente Sederberg, Kazmira, Kat’s Naturals, Anavii Market, Will Power Products, Restorative Botanicals, Silver Mountain Hemp Guitars, Colorado Hemp Project, Sunstrand, and Bish Enterprises. Also on the expo floor there will be The Hemp Happy Hour Radio Show powered by CV Sciences & PlusCBDoil.
On September 1, Southern Hemp Expo will announce its 2018 Presenting Sponsor – a Tennessee company set to take hemp processing to the next level.

Hemp Can Help Heal Hawaii’s Agricultural Past
On June 10th hemp enthusiasts from around the world will descend on Hilo, Hawaii to discuss innovations in the hemp industry and its exciting future on the islands. The Hawaii Hemp Conference will host a mini expo and marketplace and a Let’s Talk Hemp speaker series. One focus of the conference will be the history of agriculture on the Hawaiian islands and how modern hemp farming can help repair the damage done by centuries of degradation.
Hawaii has a complex agricultural history. After colonization, Hawaii quickly went from sustainable farming practices to industrial monoculture sugarcane operations. As Hawaiian’s farming methods and culture were being eroded by this new system so too were their soils and landscapes.
Traditional Hawaiian culture revolves around farming and the ancient ahupua’a system. An Ahupua’a is a pie-shaped section of land that starts at the top of a mountain and extends down to the sea. The ahupua’a were farmed in terraces and were how Hawaiian communities were organized.
Today most food is imported to the islands, but originally Islanders had to subsist on what they could cultivate on the ahupua’as. This necessitated an advanced farming system revolving around the staple taro that included bananas, sweet potatoes, and coconuts, as well as many others including sugarcane.
It didn’t take long for the first colonizers to notice the natives farming sugarcane. Very quickly after, many parts of the islands were cleared for monocrops of sugarcane. The industrial sugarcane operations that dominated Hawaiian society for almost 100 years had a tragic environmental and societal effect on the islands. The plantations used damaging farming methods and forced labor that caused deforestation, left the soil depleted, corrupted waterways, and eroded the traditional culture.
The last of the destructive sugarcane operations has closed and now Hawaii is looking to the future and how they can provide food for residents and repair the environmental damage. Doug Fine, sustainable lifestyle pioneer and hemp industry leader says, “No matter what direction Hawaii’s farmers and entrepreneurs take, Step One is soil rebuilding after a century and a half of monoculture, over-grazing, or other soil issues. The fact that hemp not only helps rebuild soil but provides a valuable harvest from season one makes it integral to Hawaii’s agricultural Renaissance.”
The governor of Hawaii, David Ige, has made food security and self-sufficiency a top priority for his administration, and hemp can play a large role in this need, as well as in other exciting and creative solutions to Hawaii’s challenges. Says Fine, “Hawaii has extra issues that mandate food and industrial independence: namely shipping costs. So on the Hawaiian islands, we might very well see the early adoption of high tech hemp applications, such as 3D printing of auto parts, as well as large-scale hemp cultivation for human and livestock feed.”
Addressing these needs and the opportunity for hemp to be a solution will be a theme of the conference. Hemp’s merits as a low-input crop lend itself beautifully to large-scale and small-scale terrace farming where the soil and environment need to be repaired. Two panels will directly tackle these issues, After Sugar: Making a Living from the Soil and Soil Building and Soil Healing On A Volcanic Island Chain. While these discussions are specific to Hawaii, the talks will have broad implications for anyone working on hemp farming where the land has been compromised from a history of agricultural degradation.
Get you tickets now for the Hawaii Hemp Conference to learn more about the amazing opportunities for hemp on the islands (and the mainland) and meet with others in the field doing wonderful work with hemp.
The Hawaii Hemp Conference is produced by Colorado Hemp Company and presented by Functional Remedies, which cultivates organic hemp and a produces whole plant processed full spectrum hemp extracts.

SLV Hemp Symposium
here is a valley in South Central Colorado, an ancient intercontinental seaway, where the uplifting of the Rocky Mountains has created a unique natural environment. Bordered to the west by the San Juan Mountains and to the east by the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the San Luis Valley is the highland of an endorheic basin which supplies the headwaters and aquifers of the Rio Grande River.
Wild horses roam free over the low-lying “chico” greasewood bushes while a multitude of hawks soar above in the big sky. The high-altitude desert is home to a rugged lifestyle. This is where many self-sustaining people live.

Road to NoCo Starts Now
By Morris Beegle
Photo credit: Margaret MacKenzieHowdy folks, welcome to my first blog in a very long time. We’re putting the final touches on launching registration for the 4th annual NoCo Hemp Expo and I thought it would be a good time to reflect back on what has transpired since the beginning of April. For those of you that attended NoCo3, you know it was pretty epic, and some might say Pure-Hemp-Epicness! One thing it was for sure, was an excellent gathering of smart, passionate, forward-thinking individuals who are out there fighting the good fight. The movement is alive and we are now in the final days of hemp and cannabis prohibition. How the chips fall over the coming months and years is not for certain, but what we can say for sure is that prohibition as we’ve come to know it, is almost finished. And it’s our job, all of ours, to finish it. If we end up with a president Trump, disregard any and all predictions I make within this article. Prohibition will be the least of our worries.
Since NoCo3, all things hemp have kicked into overdrive for farmers, processors, entrepreneurs, associations and ancillary businesses entering into this exciting industry. People and companies are committing serious time, energy, and capital into building business relationships and infrastructure to grow. We have been gathering at industry-specific functions locally and nationally, working together state by state to pass meaningful legislation, all the while pushing Washington DC to pay a little bit of attention to our industry. We’ve had missteps along the way, we’ve had little victories and big victories, DEA, FDA and USDA interference to varying degrees, and we have more work to do.
Speaking of industry gatherings, this summer kicked off with a slew of Hemp History Week events followed up in July with the Science of Industrial Hemp Conference in Denver and Hemp On The Slope in Collbran, CO. August gave us The NoCo Hemp Village at the Arise Music Festival with Ziggy Marley, Jurassic 5, Papadosio and 100 other acts at one of the top-conscious festivals anywhere. If you’ve attended Arise you know what I’m talking about, and if you haven’t, you need to attend. This last week from September 18-20, the 23rd Annual Hemp Industries Association Conference came to Westminster, CO and provided a truly exceptional forum for industry professionals to interact and do business. There was a nice blend of old school and new school hempsters participating in panels and presentations, exhibiting, networking, and having fun. The way it should be.
The Road to NoCo begins early October with the launch of sponsor and exhibitor registration. We’re truly excited for NoCo4 which takes place again in Loveland at The Ranch Events complex on March 31-April 1, 2017.
Moving on, Friday October 14th we celebrate with the 3rd annual Hemp Harvest Party happening at Globe Hall in Denver. This is an industry focused networking party and concert, featuring great Colorado acts including the Taylor Scott Band with special guest Dave Beegle, Rob Drabkin and Rob Trueblood. We pay homage to hemp farmers around the state and country for the work and progress they’ve done throughout the 2016 growing season.
Late October brings us to the 3rd Annual Colorado Hemp Symposium and Legislative Workshop on October 26th in Loveland. This event is hosted by Congressman Jared Polis and more information can be found at Here.
In November we head on the road to Adams State University in Alamosa for the inaugural San Luis Valley (SLV) Hemp Symposium taking place on Saturday November 5th. This is a smaller trade show and conference that will feature 25-35 hemp companies with the educational LET’S TALK HEMP sessions going on throughout the day. Please contact us if you are interested in joining us. More information on this event can be found at www.slvhempsymposium.com.
That’s it for now. I hope to start blogging a little more frequently going forward and share information that seems to get lost along the way. Feel free to reach out to me at hemp@coloradohempcompany.com with any comments, thoughts, or blog topic suggestions. Thanks for reading.

Simply put, there isn’t an expo in the world that better encompasses the potential of the hemp plant. NoCo Hemp Expo is host to a growing network of individuals coming together in support of a tremendous opportunity for local industry, agriculture, and small business economy.
“Eurofins STA Laboratories is a newcomer to the testing of hemp seed for germination, seed health and cultivar purity and the 2016 NOCO Hemp Expo was a tremendous help in getting the word out to growers and companies about our services. Having a booth at the Expo provided us the means by which we could reach many potential clients in a short span of time. It was well worth it.” -John R. Mizicko, Business Development Manager at Eurofins STA Laboratories

The Rebirth of Industrial Hemp: Processing and Bio-refineries
Hemp is on the rise today, and facilities like Pure Hemp Technology and contributing to what Carl Lehrburger calls, “the thrust of the hemp revolution”.
By: Abbie Marks
With the passing of the federal Farm Bill and supporting state pilot programs, local businesses are providing farmers an opportunity in industrial hemp while manufacturing eco-friendly products.Pure Hemp Technology, a hemp processing plant and bio-refinery located in Fort Lupton, CO is doing just that, promoting sustainable agriculture by converting industrial hemp into useable products.
As of last year, Colorado Department of Agriculture reported 3,675 acres of hemp grown in 2016, nearly tripling in volume of growing space and in number of participants last year. According to the National Hemp Association, hemp farming nationwide grew 1,000% in 2015.
Hemp farmers are driving the demand for companies like Pure Hemp Technology to process hemp today.
In this video with Ed Lehrburger, Founder of Pure Hemp Technology and Dani Billings, Co-Founder of Colorado Hemp Project and Nature’s Root discuss the role of the hemp plant in Colorado’s’ booming agricultural economy.
“Processing represents the thrust of the hemp revolution.” –Carl Lehrburger, Executive Manager of Pure Hemp Technology
Pure Hemp Technology is a wet processing plant which distinguishes them in their approach and represents a key “central supply chain” that simply doesn’t exist for whole plant processing.

(media credit: www.purehemptech.com)This allows plants like Pure Vision to refine hemp into higher value products and strains in addition to fiber, pulps for paper, and other materials like lignin which consists of 20% of the plant. These materials are processed into several applications from chemicals and plastics to sugars, sweeteners, alcohol, and more.
Pure Vision/Pure Hemp Technology is a registered R&D facility in Colorado, producing different grades of pulps and stalks/hurd, long fibers, into useful products for green businesses.
Processing these co-products into these higher value products is critical to growing hemp.
“A company looking into textiles, processing, seed, etc, that only represents a fraction (of the market value),” says Lehrburger, “it makes growing it (hemp) more valuable (for American farmers).”
Facilities like Pure Hemp Technology provide farmers a means to commodify their harvest as well as readily available sustainable alternatives and to everyday consumer goods.
“Farmers have to be successful, pricing of commodities has to also be successful to buy seed, specialized equipment, etc.”
In light of the decline in opportunity and the challenges faced by Rural American farmers today, Lehrburger discussed the potential for jobs not only in the growing and agricultural sectors but in processing and manufacturing.
“The start of the hemp industry seems to represents a significant opportunity for revitalizing rural America, where the bigger picture is replacing oil-based products with bio-based products.”
In this article from Environmental Health News, Jessica Knoblauch reports that “evidence is mounting that the chemical building blocks that make plastics so versatile are the same components that might harm people and the environment. And its production and disposal contribute to an array of environmental problems.” 1.
Supporting the Industrial Hemp Farming Act, urging businesses to consider go green, and reaching out to congress is a huge push away from plastics and a way to help surge the rebirth of industrial hemp.

Ed will be speaking at the Let’s Talk Hemp stage along with several key industry experts and business leaders during Saturday, April 2. Driving Hemp into the Future: BMW Goes Biodegradable
Lighter-weight, fuel-efficient vehicles with hemp are right down the road.
By: Brad Shannon
Why use hemp to make automobiles? For a number of reasons. Hemp is lighter than steel or fiberglass, resists dents and is not brittle like carbon fiber, and it is biodegradable. Most importantly, hemp is carbon negative, says Bruce Dietzen of Renew Sports Cars.

(BMW door panel – media credit: Redspiderfish/Flickr)Work is ongoing in Australia and Europe to create plant-based materials to replace parts that today use plastic and metal. A reduction in weight of 30% for such parts provides an instant boost in fuel economy, with a higher strength-to-weight ratio than steel. When it reaches the end of its useful life, just bury it and let it biodegrade.
You may have come across the story of Henry Ford’s hemp car online. Unfortunately, it seems that there is a lot of myth to that tale, according to The Angry Historian – at least when it comes to how much of the car was actually made of hemp. Rather, the plastic body panels used standard resin binder combined with natural materials such as hemp fiber as fill material. That popular image of Ford taking a whack at a car with an axe? It was a soybean-based material.

(media credit: Ford archives)
A sleeker, safer, faster modern take on a hemp car is a slick sports car built on a Mazda Miata chassis by Dietzen. The car’s body is made of hemp, and runs on biofuel that is a closed carbon loop in that it does not add any new carbon to the atmosphere when burned. It made an appearance down the road from us in Denver late last year. The next big step, it appears, could be vehicles with 3D printed hemp bodies; but some find it hard to beat the Lotus Eco Elise prototype from the 2008 British Motor Show, or the i3 and i8 concepts from BMW that incorporated hemp.

(media credit: Renew Sports Cars)If you’re like most, though, your budget may run more along the lines of the electric Kestrel with hemp body panels promised by Calgary, Canada-based Motiv Industries (a neighboring market with more enlightened views on hemp cultivation that puts companies there at an advantage).

(media credit: Motiv Industries)Not ready for a hemp-based car body? How about a nicer, more natural interior? Mercedes led the industry with jute-based door panels in its E-class, and BMW and Audi VW have followed in the use of plant fibers in their vehicles.

CBD Herbal Elixir Bar Featured at NoCo Hemp Expo
On April 1st-2nd at the NoCo Hemp Expo, The Apothecary will be featuring their Herbal Synergy Elixir Bar, but this weekend they are focusing on hemp. They will be serving herbal-infused probiotic drinks all weekend in addition to their other products. On Friday night, The Spagyric Apothecary will have eight different herbal infusions, four of which will have 15-20 mg CBD to sample during the National Hemp Association’s Networking Event. This will be a time to try out a blend and see how it makes you feel, but most of all to see if it works for you.
They have worked hard on developing these blends to maximize effectiveness for all of hemp’s different uses as a dietary supplement. Since CBD works on so many areas of the body, they have combined it with other plants high in CBD-like chemicals, vitamins and antioxidants. In this way, they are focusing the cannabinoids in hemp to act on certain areas of the body. The synergy of fusing high-CBD hemp with different herbs creates something more powerful than any herb by itself.
Check out the Elixir Bar Menu below and be sure to stop by booth #73 during Friday or Saturday for a sample.
